RAISED IN RUINS

Child sillouhette agains rubble of buildings.

Raised in Ruins is a searing poetic memoir told in verse—an unflinching excavation of trauma, silence, and survival. Spanning childhood through fatherhood, Fischer A. Millsap maps the emotional landscape of growing up invisible in a household cracked by violence, addiction, and abandonment. Each poem is a confession, a scar, a breath held too long.
Divided into three parts and closed by a series of ten bonus poems, this collection charts an evolving narrative: from a boy who learns to disappear in his own home, to a man wrestling with inherited pain, addiction, and what it means to stay alive for someone else. Along the way, Millsap confronts masculinity, generational wounds, and the ache of being unloved out loud.
With brutal lyricism and aching clarity, Raised in Ruins speaks for the ones who were never asked how they were doing. It is not a redemption story—but it is a survival story, raw and real. For anyone who’s ever been told to “man up” instead of speak up, these pages are proof that breathing—still—is a kind of resistance.

The POWER of PAIN:

Transforming Suffering into Strength and Success

"We cannot selectively numb emotions; when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions." This profound insight from BrenĂ© Brown sets the foundation for "The Power of Pain: Transforming Suffering into Strength and Success," where Ivan Lozada unveils a transformative journey from devastating hardship to profound purpose. Drawing from his compelling journey as a political refugee who rebuilt his life from scratch, Lozada illuminates how adversity, when approached with mindfulness and courage, becomes our most powerful catalyst for transformation. Weaving together authentic personal narrative with cutting-edge psychological research and timeless wisdom from diverse spiritual traditions, the book reveals how our deepest suffering can sculpt us into more resilient, compassionate, and purposeful beings. Through masterfully crafted stories of remarkable individuals like Elon Musk's near-bankruptcy experiences, Malala Yousafzai's response to violence, and Nelson Mandela's transcendent forgiveness, readers witness the universal truth that our greatest pain can be alchemized into our greatest power. Lozada expertly explores Viktor Frankl's revolutionary insights about finding meaning in suffering, presents fascinating discoveries from modern neuroscience on resilience, and offers practical, evidence-based strategies for navigating life's darkest moments. Each chapter concludes with thoughtfully designed reflective exercises that guide readers to harness their specific pain points, cultivate lasting resilience, discover profound meaning in suffering, and unlock hidden strengths to overcome challenges in relationships, career transitions, health crises, and identity struggles. This essential resource speaks directly to anyone walking through life's inevitable valleys—from trauma survivors seeking healing to professionals navigating major life transitions. It delivers both profound wisdom and immediately applicable guidance, demonstrating that our most extraordinary strengths often emerge precisely from our most excruciating pain. Your journey toward transformation begins not by avoiding your suffering, but by embracing it as the doorway to your greatest potential.

Wonderful Day

A Lone Chair Sitting on a Hill at Sunset.

Wonderful Day

Excerpt:

The sky burned a fiery red, lighting the road back to the family farm. In my arms, I carried my dog, Chance, who had suffered a broken leg. I had contemplated eating him but quickly chose otherwise. I would instead return home to gather in prayer and die. I had but a mile to go when I saw her, standing perfectly still. Her small, lean frame resembled a crane, but they had perished long ago, succumbing to the ravenous drought.

“May I help you?” I asked.

She turned to me and smiled. “My name is Hope.”

GOODREADS REVIEWS:

Steve Akerson - "What a wonderful short story. It takes only minutes to read, but it carries a lot with it. I'm sure there is much, much more in the story that I did not catch the first time I read it, so I'll read it again. The book is full of Hope, full of peace, full of the truth about our loving Father. His love pours out of every page, meeting each person at the point of their need, and filling them with hope for tomorrow - even if they don't have a clue what tomorrow will bring.

Turns out that the tomorrow's in this book bring Jesus and his new-every-day mercies to a growing crowd of needy folks. His love surrounds them as they are continually astounded by his works.

I urge you to read this book, and think of Jesus and others around you as you do. Opportunities will come your way to bring Hope to those who desperately need it."

Unearthed:

The Lies We Carry & The Truths They Bury

"Unearthed: The Lies We Carry & The Truths They Bury" by Chanchal Garg

Published June 2, 2025 | 5.0 out of 5 stars Chanchal Garg’s "Unearthed: The Lies We Carry & The Truths They Bury" is a powerful and unflinching memoir that confronts spiritual abuse, cultural expectations, and the long, complex process of personal reclamation. With deft and lyrical prose, Garg tells the story of how a moment of unexpected insight during a yoga class—while pregnant with her daughter—forced her to reckon with the silence, shame, and subjugation she had carried for much of her life. Raised as a devoted Indian daughter within a tightly woven cultural and religious community, Garg was taught to never question authority. Her account reveals how those beliefs were weaponized to mask sexual misconduct and spiritual manipulation, and how systems of power—from family to faith—can enable abuse while demanding loyalty. The memoir explores what it means to be bicultural and to question the very structures that shaped one’s identity. What sets "Unearthed" apart is not only its deeply personal narrative, but also its broader relevance. Garg’s story speaks directly to women of color who have been silenced within communities that ask for their sacrifice but not their voice. Her experience is recounted with emotional clarity and intellectual rigor, illuminating how generational trauma, cult dynamics, and misplaced devotion can coexist with love, duty, and tradition. This is a feminist memoir that challenges readers to reconsider the boundaries of faith, family, and cultural belonging. Garg’s journey from trauma to self-trust is not framed as a neat transformation, but rather as a process of spiritual survival and hard-won healing. "Unearthed" offers rare insight into the internal conflicts faced by many survivors of abuse within spiritual or cultural systems—and the courage required to break free. A standout debut, this memoir is essential reading for those drawn to stories of healing from sexual abuse, challenging inherited roles, and redefining power on one’s own terms. Garg’s work sits firmly within the growing canon of memoirs by South Asian American women that center truth-telling and liberation. Through "Unearthed," she emerges not only as a survivor, but as a sharp and necessary new voice in literature.
